About UPF50+
What is UPF50+?
UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, is the international standard that measures an anti-UV fabric's ability to filter ultraviolet rays. A UPF50+ certified item blocks over 98% of UVA and UVB rays, allowing only a tiny fraction of solar radiation to penetrate.
For comparison, a classic cotton t-shirt generally offers limited protection, often less than UPF10. A UPF50+ certified garment thus provides a significantly higher level of protection, while retaining lightness, comfort, and elegance.
Why is this essential?
The sun is a source of well-being, but excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays can have lasting consequences on the skin.
UVA rays penetrate deep into skin tissues and contribute to premature skin aging. UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn and cell damage related to sun exposure.
While sun protection remains essential, its effectiveness depends on regular application. UPF50+ certified clothing, on the other hand, offers continuous and even protection throughout the day, without the need for reapplication.
How does UPF certification work?
UPF certification is awarded following analyses conducted by independent laboratories according to internationally recognized protocols.
Fabrics undergo rigorous testing that precisely measures the amount of ultraviolet radiation capable of passing through the material. To achieve UPF50+ level, the textile must block a minimum of 98% of UV radiation.
UPF50+ currently represents the highest level of protection recognized for clothing intended for sun exposure.
UPF and SPF: what's the difference?
SPF measures the effectiveness of sunscreen applied to the skin, primarily against UVB.
UPF, on the other hand, evaluates a textile's ability to protect against both UVA and UVB simultaneously.
These two protections are complementary. A UPF50+ certified garment provides a permanent physical barrier against ultraviolet rays, offering reliable protection throughout the day.
